Course number and title: MIE231H1 - Probability and Statistics with Engineering Applications

Course description: Use of data in engineering decision processes. Elements of probability theory. Discrete and continuous random variables. Standard distributions: binomial, Poisson, hypergeometric, exponential, normal etc. Expectation and variance. Random sampling and parameter estimation. Confidence intervals. Hypothesis testing. Goodness-of-fit tests. Regression and correlation. Statistical Process Control and quality assurance. Engineering applications in manufacturing, instrumentation and process control.

Estimated course enrolment (approximately): 200

Class schedule: Wednesday 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM;

Friday 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Sessional dates of appointment: September to December 2026

Salary: $15,000 (per half course inclusive of vacation pay) Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications: Applicants should have a strong record of presenting lectures or acting as a teaching assistant. Applicants must be able to demonstrate considerable depth of knowledge and experience in the subject area. All applicants should have excellent communication skills - both oral and written. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Limited License (LEL) is strongly preferred. Engineering Intern (EIT) is also acceptable.

Description of duties: Preparation of lectures and course materials; delivery of lectures; supervision of Teaching Assistants; setting and marking of tests and exams; evaluation of final grades; contact with students.
